Gatorgrinder User Instructions

General Information

In order to provide you with suitable wastewater disposal, your home is served by a low pressure sewer system. The Gatorgrinder is the key element in this system. The tank collects all solid materials and effluent from the house. The solid materials are then ground to a small size suitable for pumping as a slurry with the effluent water. The grinder pump generates sufficient pressure to pump this slurry from your home to the wastewater treatment receiving line and/or disposal plant.

Congratulations on your Gatorgrinder. With proper care and by following a few guidelines, your grinder pump will give you years of dependable service.

Care and Use of your Gatorgrinder

The Gatorgrinder is capable of accepting and pumping a wide range of materials. Regulatory agencies advise that the following items should not be introduced into any sewer, either directly or through a kitchen waste disposal unit:
  • Glass
  • Diapers, socks, rags or cloth
  • Metal
  • Plastic objects (toys. utensils. etc.)
  • Seafood shells Sanitary napkins or tampons
    Egg Shells
  • Dirt or Sand

In addition, you must never introduce into any sewer:

  • Explosives
  • Strong chemicals
  • Flammable material
  • Gasoline
  • Lubricating oil and/or grease

Any damage caused by unauthorized personnel will be charged to the customer. Any repairs due to materials found in the care and use category will be the responsibility of the customer

Periods of Disuse

If your home or building is left unoccupied for longer than a couple of weeks, perform the following procedure:
Purge the System. Run clean water into the unit until the pump activates. Immediately turn off the water and allow the grinder pump to run until it shuts off automatically,

Caution: Do not disconnect power to the unit

Power Failure

Your grinder pump cannot dispose of wastewater without electrical power. If electrical power service is interrupted, keep water usage to a minimum.

Pump Failure Alarm

Your Gatorgrinder has been manufactured to produce an alarm signal (120 volt) in the event of a high water level in the basin. The installer must see that the alarm signal provided is connected to an audible and/or visual alarm in such a manner as to provide adequate warning to the user that service is required. During the interim prior to the arrival of an authorized service technician, water usage must be limited to the reserve capacity of the tank,
For service. Please call:

Bastrop County WCID #2 512-321-1688 24 Hrs a day.
Do not call a Plumber or try to work on the pump yourself.

Important - Please Read

Dear Bastrop Water District #2 Customer,

My name is JJ, I am the Customer Service Inspector (CSI) assigned to your account. I need you to contact me so we can discuss this inspection and what you need to have completed in order to comply with State Regulations. Please have your account number or meter number available. This inspection is to protect you and your family from cross-connections (see next page). Be advised, you have already paid this inspection fee.

Please note: If property is vacant, used for agricultural purposes, residential or commercial, an inspection still needs to be performed.
Outside faucet must have a vacuum breaker or be an anti-siphon faucet, even for temporary and construction use.
Wells, ponds, lakes, etc. cannot be connected to the public water supply.
Yard sprinkler systems must have a testable backflow and be tested by a licensed tester and the test paper turned into Water District #2.
Livestock water trough must have vacuum breaker even if you are using automatic waters.
This is just a few of the cross connections we will check for. Some, but not all, will apply to each home.
If you are building a home you can have your builder contact me.

Please call within 10 days after your meter has been installed, transferred or reconnected.

Be aware this is your responsibility to make sure you pass this inspection. There is no reason for anyone to fail the inspection. Failure could result in another inspection fee and/or termination of water service.

Sincerely,

JJ Jones
Customer Service Inspector

PROTECTING YOUR HOME AGAINST CROSS-CONNECTIONS

Without proper protection devices, something as useful as your garden hose has the potential to poison your home's water supply. In fact, over half of the nation's cross-connections involve unprotected garden hoses.
What is a "cross-connection?"

A cross-connection is a permanent or temporary piping arrangement, which can allow your drinking water to be contaminated if a backflow condition, occurs.
What is "backflow"?

It's just what it sounds like: the water is flowing in the opposite direction from its normal flow. With the direction of flow reversed, due to a change in pressures, backflow can allow contaminants to enter our drinking water system through cross-connections.

A potentially hazardous cross-connection occurs every time someone uses a garden hose sprayer to apply insecticides or herbicides to their lawn. Another cross-connection occurs when someone uses their garden hose to clear a stoppage in their sewer line.

Without a backflow prevention device between your hose and hose bibb (spigot or outside faucet), the contents of the hose and anything it is connected to can backflow into the piping system and contaminate your drinking water.

Backflows due to cross-connections are serious plumbing problems. They can cause sickness and even death. However, they can be avoided by the use of proper protection devices. Each spigot at your home should have a hose-bibb vacuum breaker installed. This is a simple, inexpensive device, which can be purchased at any plumbing or hardware store. Installation is as easy as attaching your garden hose to a spigot.

If you have a new meter, a customer service inspector should be contacting you soon. They will provide more information on cross-connection control and backflow prevention for your home or business.
